Step-by-Step Instructions:
Inserting a zipper might seem intimidating at first, but with a bit of patience and the right technique, it can be quite straightforward. Whether you’re adding a zipper to a dress, skirt, or any other project, a properly inserted zipper not only improves functionality but also gives your garment a polished and professional finish.
Materials Needed:
- Zipper (appropriate length for your project)
- Fabric pieces
- Sewing machine with zipper foot
- Thread
- Pins or fabric clips
- Seam ripper
- Iron
Tips for Sewing Zipper:
- Topstitching: For added durability and a decorative touch, you can topstitch around the zipper.
- Invisible Zipper: If you’re using an invisible zipper, you’ll need a special invisible zipper foot and slightly different techniques.
- Practice: If you’re new to inserting zippers, practice on scrap fabric to get comfortable with the process.
1. Prepare the Fabric
- Finish the raw edges of the fabric where the zipper will be inserted using a serger or zigzag stitch to prevent fraying.
- Press the seam allowances open.
2. Mark the Zipper Placement
- On the wrong side of the fabric, mark the zipper placement. Measure and mark the length of the zipper from the top edge of the fabric down the seam allowance.
- Mark the bottom of the zipper with a horizontal line.
3. Sew the Seam Below the Zipper
- Pin the fabric pieces right sides together.
- Sew the seam below the zipper placement with the regular stitch length.
- Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam.
- Baste the seam above the zipper placement with a long stitch length.
4. Press the Seam Open
- Press the entire seam open with an iron, including the basted portion.
5. Position the Zipper
- Place the zipper face down on the seam allowance with the teeth centered over the seam. The zipper top should align with the top edge of the fabric.
- Pin or clip the zipper in place.
6. Attach the Zipper Foot
- Attach the zipper foot to your sewing machine. This foot allows you to sew close to the zipper teeth.
7. Sew One Side of the Zipper
- Starting at the top of the zipper, sew down one side of the zipper tape. Sew as close to the zipper teeth as possible without hitting them.
- Stop at the horizontal mark at the bottom of the zipper, leaving the needle in the fabric.
8. Pivot and Sew Across the Bottom
- With the needle down, pivot the fabric and sew across the bottom of the zipper.
9. Sew the Other Side of the Zipper
- Pivot the fabric again and sew up the other side of the zipper tape, close to the teeth.
- Backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the stitching.
10. Remove Basting Stitches
- Use a seam ripper to carefully remove the basting stitches from the seam. This will expose the zipper.
11. Press the Zipper Area
- Give the zipper area a final press to ensure it lies flat and smooth.
