Step-by-Step Instructions:

A rotary cutter is a game-changing tool for sewists and quilters, allowing for multi-layered cutting and incredibly straight lines when paired with a self-healing mat and ruler.

Materials Needed:
  1. Rotary cutter (45mm is standard)
  2. Self-healing cutting mat
  3. Acrylic quilting ruler
  4. Fabric (pressed and flat)
  5. Replacement blades
Safety Tips:
  • Always close the blade guard immediately after every single cut.
  • Always cut away from your body, never toward your fingers.
  • Change your blade as soon as it starts skipping threads to avoid jagged edges and extra pressure.
1. Prepare Your Cutting Surface
  • Lay your self-healing mat on a flat, stable table. Ensure your fabric is pressed and folded neatly, aligning the selvages for a true grainline.
2. Position the Ruler
  • Place your acrylic ruler over the fabric. Align the grid lines of the ruler with the fold or selvage of your fabric to ensure a perfectly square cut.
3. Grip and Pressure
  • Hold the ruler firmly with your non-cutting hand (use a “spider grip” with fingers spread). Hold the rotary cutter like a handle, placing your index finger on the spine for control.
4. Execute the Cut
  • Start the blade just off the edge of the fabric. Push the cutter forward along the edge of the ruler in one smooth motion, applying firm downward pressure.
5. Check the Cut
  • Before moving the ruler, gently pull the scrap fabric away to ensure all threads are cut. If everything is clear, engage the safety lock and move to your next piece.

Top FAQs for Rotary Cutting:

What size rotary cutter is best for beginners? +

The 45mm rotary cutter is the most versatile and popular size. It handles most quilting and garment projects with ease and has the widest variety of replacement blades available.

How often should I change my rotary blade? +

You should change your blade when you notice “skipped” threads or if you have to press significantly harder to get through the fabric. A fresh blade prevents hand fatigue and fabric damage.

Can I use a rotary cutter without a mat? +

No. You must use a self-healing cutting mat. Using a rotary cutter on a hard surface will instantly dull or nick the blade and permanently damage your table.

Are rotary cutters better than sewing scissors? +

Rotary cutters are superior for straight lines, strips, and cutting multiple layers of fabric at once. However, scissors are still better for intricate notches and small, tight curves.
