Step-by-Step Instructions:
Learn how to sew a faced hem step-by-step to give your garments a clean, professional finish—ideal for curved hems and high-end garments.
Materials Needed:
- Fabric for your main garment
- Matching or coordinating
- facing fabric (light to medium weight)
- Sewing machine
- Thread matching your garment
- Pins or fabric clips
- Fabric scissors or rotary cutter
- Iron and ironing board
- Measuring tape or hem gauge
- Tailor’s chalk or fabric marking tool
Tips for Perfect Belt Loops:
- Use lightweight fabric for the facing to avoid bulk at the hem.
- Prewash and press all fabrics before cutting.
- For curved hems, bias-cut facings offer better shaping and drape.
- Always test your hem finish on a scrap before sewing your final garment.
1. Prepare the Facing Pattern
- Draft a facing pattern by tracing the bottom edge of your garment (usually 2″–3″ deep).
- Add seam allowance to both the top and bottom of the facing piece.
- Make sure the length of the facing matches the hem circumference.
2. Cut and Finish the Facing
- Cut the facing from your chosen fabric.
- Finish the top edge of the facing with a serger, pinking shears, or by turning under ¼” and stitching.
- Press the finished edge flat for a clean finish.
3. Attach the Facing to the Hem
- With right sides together, align the bottom edge of the facing with the hem edge of the garment.
- Pin or clip the edges evenly, matching any seams or notches.
- Stitch along the hem edge with the designated seam allowance (usually ½”).
4. Grade and Clip the Seam
- Trim the seam allowance on the facing side slightly shorter than the garment side (grading).
- If the hem is curved, clip into the seam allowance every ½” to allow it to lie flat.
5. Press the Facing Up
- Press the facing away from the garment, and press the seam allowance toward the facing.
- Understitch the seam allowance to the facing to keep it from rolling to the outside.
6. Turn and Press the Hem
- Turn the facing to the inside of the garment.
- Carefully press the hem, ensuring the seam sits right at the fold for a crisp edge.
6. Finish the Hem Facing
- Pin the top edge of the facing in place inside the garment.
- Secure the facing by hand-stitching (invisible slip stitch) or machine topstitching near the top edge, depending on the look you want.
- Give the hem one final press for a clean, professional finish.
