How to take Measurements

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Learn how to take full body measurements for yourself and those you are sewing garments for. You’ll need to do this too for accurate pattern cutting, making, and sewing. It even comes in hand for online shopping.

Materials Needed:
  • Measuring tape (preferably flexible)
  • Mirror
  • Pen and paper or a measurement chart
  • A friend to assist, if possible
Tips for Accurate Measurements:
  • Consistency: Ensure the measuring tape is always parallel to the floor for horizontal measurements.
  • Assistance: If possible, have a friend help with measurements to ensure accuracy, especially for hard-to-reach areas.
  • Check Twice: Double-check each measurement for accuracy.
1. Prepare for Measurement
  • Wear fitted clothing or undergarments similar to what you will wear under the garment you are making.
  • Stand in front of a mirror to ensure the measuring tape is positioned correctly.
  • Stand straight with a natural posture, and breathe normally.
2. Measure
  • Bust: Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust, usually across the nipples and around the back.
  • bric strip lengthwise with the right side facing out.
  • Waist: Wrap the measuring tape around your natural waist, typically the narrowest part of your torso.
  • Hips: Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks, usually 7-9 inches below your natural waist.
  • High Bust: Wrap the measuring tape around your chest, just under your arms and above your bust.
  • Shoulder Width: Measure from the tip of one shoulder to the tip of the other, across the back.
  • Arm Length: With your arm slightly bent, measure from the shoulder tip (where the shoulder seam would be) down to your wrist bone.
  • Neck Circumference: Wrap the measuring tape around the base of your neck.
  • Back Waist Length: Measure from the nape of your neck (the prominent bone at the base of your neck) down to your natural waistline.
  • Front Waist Length: Measure from the top of your shoulder, over the fullest part of your bust, down to your natural waistline.
  • Inseam: Measure from the crotch along the inside of your leg to the desired pant length (ankle bone for most pants).
