Step-by-Step Instructions:
A blind stitch is a hand-sewing technique used to create an almost invisible seam. It’s perfect for hemming pants, skirts, and dresses or for closing up openings in pillows and other projects.
Materials Needed:
- Needle
- Thread (matching the fabric color)
- Scissors
- Pins
- Iron
Tips for sewing a Blind Stitch:
- Stitch Length: Keep your stitches small and even for a neat finish.
- Thread Color: Use a thread that closely matches your fabric to make the stitches as invisible as possible.
- Practice: If you’re new to the blind stitch, practice on a scrap piece of fabric before working on your final project.
1. Prepare Your Hem or Seam
- Fold up the hem to the desired length and press it with an iron to create a crease.
- If you’re hemming a garment, fold the raw edge under about 1/4 inch and press, then fold the hem up again and press.
2. Pin the Hem
- Pin the hem in place, making sure the folded edge is even all the way around.
3. Start the Blind Stitch
- Insert the needle into the folded edge of the hem, hiding the knot inside the fold.
4. Catch the Fabric
- Take a tiny stitch from the main fabric, just above the folded edge. Make sure to only pick up one or two threads of the fabric to keep the stitch invisible from the outside.
5. Stitch Through the Fold
- Insert the needle back into the fold, moving it forward about 1/4 inch along the fold before bringing it out again.
6. Repeat the Stitches
- Repeat the process: take a tiny stitch from the main fabric just above the fold, then take a longer stitch inside the fold. Continue this pattern along the entire hem.
7. Finish the Stitch
- When you reach the end, make a small knot inside the fold to secure the thread.Trim any excess thread.
8. Press the Hem
- Give the hem a final press with an iron to set the stitches and ensure the hem lies flat.
