- Interfacing (medium-weight fusible)
- Ruler
- Fabric marker or chalk
- Sharp fabric scissors
- Pins or clips
- Sewing machine
- Matching thread
- Iron and ironing board
Tips for a Professional Finish
- Use interfacing to reinforce the pocket opening and prevent stretching.
- Mark all stitching lines clearly before sewing to ensure accuracy.
- Press each step as you go for a crisp, professional look.
- Practice on scrap fabric before sewing on your final garment.
1. Mark the Pocket Placement
- Determine where the welt pocket will go on your garment.
- Use fabric chalk and a ruler to mark the pocket opening (usually a horizontal rectangle).
- Add guidelines for seam allowances and cutting lines.
2. Apply Interfacing
- Cut a piece of interfacing slightly larger than the pocket opening.
- Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric, centered over the marked pocket area.
3. Prepare the Welt Strip
- Cut a welt strip (usually 2 inches wide and twice the length of the pocket opening).
- Fold the strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press.
4. Attach the Welt to the Garment
- Place the folded welt strip along the bottom marked line, aligning raw edges.
- Sew along the top and bottom of the marked pocket opening.
5. Cut the Pocket Opening
- Use sharp scissors to carefully cut along the marked cutting line in the center of the pocket.
- Stop about ½ inch from each end and clip diagonally into the corners to create small triangles.
6. Turn and Press the Pocket Opening
- Push the welt fabric through the cut opening to the wrong side of the garment.
- Smooth out the edges and press well to create a crisp finish.
7. Secure the Welt in Place
- Fold the welt neatly so it covers the pocket opening.
- Pin in place and stitch around the pocket opening to secure.
8. Attach the Pocket Bag
- Cut two pocket lining pieces, slightly larger than the pocket opening.
- Sew the top pocket lining piece to the top edge of the pocket opening.
- Attach the bottom pocket lining piece to the bottom edge of the welt.
- Sew around the edges of the pocket lining to close the pocket bag.
9. Final Press and Finishing Touches
- Press the pocket again to ensure it lays flat.
- Check for even edges and make any final adjustments.
