Step-by-Step Instructions:
Facing is used most frequently for necklines and armholes and other opening edges on garments. A facing is a piece of material sewn into the inside of a garment, that strengthens it and creates a clean finish.
Materials Needed:
- Pattern pieces for facings
- Interfacing (optional, depending on fabric and desired finish)
- Pins
- Tailor’s chalk or fabric marker
- Sewing machine
- Iron
Tips for Perfect Interfacing:
- Interfacing: Lightweight interfacing adds structure to facings, particularly useful for lightweight or loosely woven fabrics.
- Understitching: This step is crucial for keeping the facing inside the garment and maintaining a clean edge.
- Finishing Edges: For a professional look, finish the raw edges of the facing with a serger, zigzag stitch, or pinking shears before attaching.
1. Cut the Facing Pieces
- Cut the armhole facing pieces from your fabric using the pattern provided.
- Cut and fuse interfacing to the facing pieces if desired.
2. Sew the Facing Pieces Together
- Sew the front and back armhole facings together at the side seams.
- Press the seams open to reduce bulk.
3. Attach the Facing to the Armhole
- With right sides together, pin the facing to the armhole, matching seams and notches.
- Sew around the armhole edge with the recommended seam allowance.
4. Clip and Understitch
- Clip the seam allowance around the curves to allow the facing to lay flat.
- Press the seam allowance towards the facing.
- Understitch by sewing the facing to the seam allowance close to the seam line.
5. Press and Secure the Facing
- Turn the facing to the inside of the garment.
- Press the armhole edge flat, ensuring the seam line is crisp.
- Optionally, you can topstitch close to the edge or tack the facing down at the side seams to keep it in place.
